Usiko: Caring for each other
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit many South Africans very hard. Already vulnerable communities, where many families are impoverished, have been especially hard hit. South Africa is a country already heavily impacted by food insecurity, and the loss of jobs and income during the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated this.
I was so fortunate to have had the opportunity to begin working with Usiko during the COVID-19 lockdown in South Africa. This incredible organisation (which you can read more about here, http://usiko.org.za) has been hard at work in the communities of Jamestown and Mountain View, just outside of Stellenbosch. By engaging with funders, businesses, and individuals within the Stellenbosch area, Usiko has been able to provide warm and nutritious meals to the Jamestown and Mountain View communities. Even in a time when provincial travel has been severly restricted, Usiko secured the necessary permits to be able help out other needy communities within the Northern Cape. This organisation, made up of local volunteers, has also been hard at work distributing food parcels and conducting outreach within these communities.
Usiko, thank you for the opportunity to work with you on this initiative! It has been a humbling experience, and so inspirational to be around a group of people are who are willing to do so much for others!
If you wish to get involved or to donate please do not hesitate to reach out to us or to the team at Usiko.
